Gina Patterson



Gina Patterson has been hailed as a choreographer of “startling originality” (Backstage Magazine) and “a standout on the soulful front” (Sun-Sentinel). Renowned Chicago arts critic Richard Christiansen said of her work “I got a strong jolt of engaging creativity that took me by surprise and made me want more.” and wrote “…she has somehow harnessed breath itself; gasping, panting, sighing. It is an endless series of surprises.”

She was awarded the 2002 Choo San Goh Award for Choreography, the B. Iden Payne Award for Outstanding Choreographer, was selected five times for the Ballet Builder’s Showcase in New York, and was recently nominated for an Isadora Duncan Dance Award – Outstanding Achievement in Choreography. Ms. Patterson is a winner of the Hubbard Street 2 National Choreographic Competition and the National Choreographic Initiative.

Since 1998, Ms. Patterson has created over 80 original works, 10 of them full-evening productions, for companies including VOICE, Atlanta Ballet, Cincinnati Ballet, Nashville Ballet, Richmond Ballet, MADCO, Hubbard Street 2, CoDa21, Ballet Austin, Ballet Concierto, Ballet Florida, Dayton Ballet, BalletMet, DanceWorks Chicago, Imagery, Ballet Pacifica, Ballet East, Interlochen Arts Academy, Point Park University, Goucher College and the University of Iowa. Her ballets have been presented internationally in Italy, Germany, Slovenia, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, and Spain. She is in demand as a master teacher and coach and since 2009 has been the artistic director of VOICE Dance Company, a project-based laboratory for her work.

With a long performance career as a principal artist and almost thirty years as a professional in the field, Ms. Patterson brings to her art a rich and varied background. She was known as a versatile, consummate performer and has worked with many prominent choreographers, dancing principal roles in both the classical and contemporary repertoire. She has danced with Pittsburgh Ballet Theater, Ballet Austin, Ballet Florida, and has performed as a guest artist around the world.
