Independence in Motion

This is a functional movement class, not a dance class. Music plays in the background to set an energizing, welcoming mood, but participants move at their own pace rather than following musical phrasing or choreography. The goal is simple: build the strength, mobility, balance, coordination, and flexibility that will allow people to keep doing the everyday tasks that let them stay safe and independent at home such as getting out of a chair, reaching a cabinet, stepping into a shower, carrying groceries, or catching themselves before a fall.

Every exercise is chosen because it mirrors a real task participants do every day and to create carryover into their life outside of class. Before each block, a few minutes will be taken to explain and demonstrate correct form and connect the movement to daily life — the why matters as much as the how. This is what creates carryover: participants leaving class and noticing the difference in places like their own kitchen, bathroom, and driveway.

Participants will be encouraged to focus on progress over perfection, to modify anything, and to keep their focus on what they can do versus what they cannot do.
