Crowds pack Frederik Meijer Gardens for butterfly ballet, exhibit

West Michigan residents packed Frederik Meijer Gardens and Sculpture Park Saturday for a butterfly exhibit and ballet performance detailing the insect’s emergence from its chrysalis.

The performance, featuring members of the Grand Rapids Ballet School, was titled “Who Am I?” and saw dancers portray insects and animals ranging from a butterfly and caterpillar to a robin and fish.

The story features a butterfly who emerges from its chrysalis and “discovers who it is by encountering several other creatures, each one having something in common with the butterfly,” according to the ballet’s program.
