Grand Rapids Ballet welcomes you to the wonder of the 2026|2027 Season.
The upcoming season launches with Broken Wings, Annabelle Lopez Ochoa’s internationally acclaimed work inspired by the life of painter Frida Kahlo. Following our holiday tradition The Nutcracker, the company will return to DeVos Hall for Ben Stevenson’s delightful production of Alice in Wonderland, and our Junior Company performs the endearing story of Pinocchio in a world-premiere from school director Attila Mosolygo. We round out the season with Jumpstart 2027, and finish with the iconic ballet Fancy Free from choreographer Jerome Robbins alongside Justin Peck’s In The Countenance of Kings and a world-premiere from company dancer, Yuka Oba-Muschiana.
BROKEN WINGS
A FRIDA KAHLO STORY
October 16-18 & 23-25, 2026

From internationally acclaimed choreographer Annabelle Lopez Ochoa, Broken Wings is inspired by the life and art of Mexican painter Frida Kahlo. Called an “intensely vivid spectacle” by San Francisco Classical Voice, Broken Wings has been seen around the world in cities such as London, Amsterdam, Chicago, Houston, and San Francisco. The ballet features surrealist imagery taken from Kahlo’s art, a score by Peter Salem that incorporates elements of Mexican folk music, and characters from her life, including her husband and creative partner Diego Rivera.
The program will also include a revival of James Sofranko’s “A Dreamer”, inspired by the life and studies of theoretical astrophysicist Stephen Hawking, featuring a score by Philip Glass and Ludwig van Beethoven.
This production includes sensitive topics and mature themes.
THE NUTCRACKER

A beloved holiday tradition, The Nutcracker follows Clara on a magical journey from her family’s Christmas party to the Land of Snow and the Kingdom of Sweets. Set to Tchaikovsky’s iconic score, and performed by the Grand Rapids Symphony, this production features Val Caniparoli’s choreography and stunning sets imagined by Chris Van Allsburg, creating a fully theatrical experience filled with wonder, beauty, and timeless holiday charm.
ALICE IN WONDERLAND

Step into the fantastical world of Ben Stevenson’s Alice in Wonderland with a colorful, humorous, and family-friendly retelling of Lewis Carrol’s classic! Narrated by Alice herself, meet the White Rabbit, the Mad Hatter, and the Queen of Hearts, complete with beautiful sets and costumes to create a fully theatrical experience for the entire family.

A world premiere by school and junior company director Attila Mosolygo. Based on Carlo Collodi’s classic tale, Pinocchio follows the adventures of a wooden puppet who longs to become a real boy. Full of imagination, humor, and heart, the ballet brings Geppetto’s workshop, the Blue Fairy, and Pinocchio’s unforgettable journey to life through expressive choreography and richly theatrical storytelling for audiences of all ages. Performed by the GRBS Junior Company.

FANCY FREE

Peter Martin Wege Theatre
One of the most famous works in the American theater, Jerome Robbins’ Fancy Free follows three sailors on shore leave in New York City. Created in 1944 with a score by Leonard Bernstein, this ballet inspired the movie “On The Town” and features bravura dancing and heartfelt charm that harkens back to another time. Also on the program will be a world premiere from company dancer Yuka Oba-Muschiana, celebrating her 16th season with the company, as well as a return of Justin Peck and Sufjan Stevens’ In The Countenance of Kings.
