SENIOR BALLET INTENSIVE

In the Summer 2020 Ballet Intensive Program, students enjoy studying with stars from today’s ballet world, refining their skills in technique and artistry. Students receive training in ballet, contemporary, pointe, men’s jumps, plus classical and contemporary variations. Our summer program also provides an opportunity to train with renowned master teachers while learning original choreography for a performance at the end of the session. Students also gain valuable tools through seminars and specialized classes in nutrition, injury prevention, cardio training and more.

JUNIOR BALLET INTENSIVE

Ages 9-13 (no audition required)

Grand Rapids Ballet School’s Summer 2020 Junior Ballet Intensive is a comprehensive program created especially with the aspiring young dancer in mind. Presented in a nurturing and encouraging environment, students will receive individual attention and custom instruction in order to accelerate their technical proficiency, and cultivate artistic expression in both ballet and contemporary styles of dance.

A Day in the Life of Your Ballet Intensive

SENIOR BALLET INTENSIVE

Receive training in technique, contemporary, repertoire, variations, turns/jumps, conditioning, pointe, mens, pas de deux, jazz, Progressing Ballet Technique, and cardio dance/yoga. Our Senior Ballet Intensive provides an opportunity to train with renowned master teachers while learning original choreography for a performance at the end of the program. You’ll also gain valuable tools through seminars and classes in nutrition, injury prevention, cardio training, and more.

  • • 12:40-1:30pm Lunch
  • • 1:30-2:45pm Contemporary
  • • 2:55-4:10pm Repertoire
  • • 4:15-5pm Progressing Ballet Technique

BALLET INTENSIVE HOUSING

Available to Senior Ballet Intensive students ages 14-22 only. Students may register to stay in supervised housing on the campus of Aquinas College. Dancers will be supervised by live-in Resident Assistants employed by Grand Rapids Ballet, and will have all lodging and transportation provided. Students have the option either to source their own individual meals, or to receive catered lunch and dinner through Grand Rapids Ballet. All students will be required to provide their own breakfast.

In addition to a furnished shared bedroom, the summer housing apartments include a shared bathroom, fully-furnished kitchen (stove, refrigerator, and dishwasher), and dining and living room space. Other apartment features include wireless internet and air conditioning.

Housing is available for 2-Week, 3-Week, and 5-Week programs. Requests for weekly housing stays need to be made separately via email. Please note, supervised housing is first come first serve.

2020 supervised apartment housing costs:

  • • $450/week includes room, transportation, and activities
  • • $580/week includes room, transportation, activities, and catered lunch and dinner meals

JUNIOR BALLET INTENSIVE

This comprehensive program is created especially with you—the aspiring young dancer—in mind. Presented in a nurturing and encouraging environment, you will receive individual attention and custom instruction in order to accelerate technical proficiency while cultivating artistic expression in both ballet and contemporary styles. Classes include technique, contemporary, turns/jumps, stretch/strengthen, jazz, and repertoire.

  • • 11-11:30am Turns
  • • 11:30am-12pm Lunch
  • • 12-1:30pm Contemporary

BALLET INTENSIVE OUTINGS

Available for Senior Ballet Intensive housing students only. Fun social activities like field trips and outings to local attractions to facilitate bonding with your fellow students in and outside the studio.

Summer 2020 Ballet Intensive Auditions

IN-PERSON AUDITION

To audition in person, dancers will need to attend a master class at one of the locations scheduled for our 2020 Audition Tour.  All Master Class Auditions are 90 minutes and include classical ballet technique and pointe for women.

The following dress code is required for all attendees:

  • • Ladies – solid colored leotard, pink tights, ballet / pointe shoes
  • • Gentlemen – white / black athletic shirt, black tights, ballet shoes

Please bring physical copies of the following items to your Master Class Audition:

  • • A headshot photograph
  • • A first arabesque photograph (en pointe for ladies, en relevé for gentlemen)

REGISTRATION INFORMATION

Registration for a Master Class Audition requires payment of a non-refundable $25 fee. This can be paid using any major credit card by completing the pre-registration form online.

Registration will also be available in-person on the day of your class beginning 30 minutes prior to the start time; exact cash or check only for in-person registration.

Questions?

When will I get the results of my audition?

Dancers will be notified of the status of their audition within two weeks of the audition date. Results will be sent via email to the primary contact listed on the audition form.

I have been accepted into the program. What should I do now?

Dancers accepted into the Senior Intensive and / or Contemporary Intensive can register for their selected program online or by paper form. Housing is available for both programs at an additional cost. Registration and Housing sign-up will close on April 6th. Program and Housing availability are first come first serve.

Is it possible to attend only 1 week of the Senior Ballet program?

Requests to attend only one week of the Senior Ballet Intensive can be made by contacting the Summer Programs Office – by email or 616.454.4771 ext. 17.

How many students are in the classes?

Junior Intensive: 15-20
Senior Intensive: 25-45
Contemporary Intensive: 20-30

Do you offer Pas de Deux classes?

Pax de Deux classes may be offered for upper level students in the Senior Ballet Intensive, depending on enrollment.

Is there a performance at the conclusion of the Summer Intensive?

Senior Intensive: Students that attend our 5-Week or 3-Week programs will have the opportunity to perform in the Summer Showcase scheduled for Friday evening, July 24.

Junior Intensive: Students that attend Weeks 4 and 5 of the program will have the opportunity to perform in the Summer Showcase scheduled for Friday evening, July 24.

Contemporary Intensive – Students that attend at least Week 2 of the Intensive program will have the opportunity to perform in the Summer Showcase scheduled for Friday evening, July 24.

Is there housing available during the program?

Housing plans are available for Senior Ballet and Contemporary Intensive students ages 14-24. Dancers looking to enroll in the housing program must do so by April 6.
