In the Summer 2020 Contemporary Intensive, students enjoy studying with stars from today’s ballet world, refining their skills in technique and artistry. Our summer program also provides an opportunity to train with renowned master teachers while learning original choreography. Students also gain valuable tools through seminars and specialized classes in nutrition, injury prevention, cardio training and more.

Summer 2020 Contemporary Intensive Schedule, Housing & Scholarships


Expand your growing dance skills beyond traditional ballet with classes in contemporary partnering, improvisation, contemporary repertoire, yoga, conditioning, and Progressing Ballet Technique. This is a truly unique workshop-style intensive that encourages group participation in an intimate learning setting.

Contemporary Intensive dancers may register to stay in supervised housing on the campus of Aquinas College. Students will be roomed in apartments with 2-3 other program dancers. Housing students will be required to provide their own meals and transportation for the duration of the program. Aquinas College is conveniently located in close proximity to a grocery store and farmers market. Transportation may be secured by using Grand Rapids public transit – pick-up and drop-off sites are located near Aquinas College and Grand Rapids Ballet School studios. Parking is available for students that bring a personal vehicle.

In addition to a furnished shared bedroom, the summer housing apartments include a shared bathroom, fully-furnished kitchen (stove, refrigerator, and dishwasher), and dining and living room space. Other apartment features include wireless internet and air conditioning.

Housing is available for both 1- and 2-week programs. Please note, supervised housing is first come first serve. Registration for housing is due by April 6, 2020. For more information, call 616.454.4771 x17 today.

2020 Contemporary Intensive supervised apartment housing cost is $350/week.

Summer 2020 Contemporary Intensive Auditions


To audition in person, dancers will need to attend a master class at one of the locations scheduled for our 2020 Audition Tour.  All Master Class Auditions are 90 minutes and include a ballet technique warm-up with contemporary classwork to follow.

The following dress code is required for all attendees:

  • • Professional dance attire which allows for a full range of movement. Ladies please wear a leotard and tights underneath.

Please bring a physical copy of the following to your Master Class Audition:

Registration for a Master Class Audition requires payment of a non-refundable $25 fee. This can be paid using any major credit card by completing the pre-registration form online.

Registration will also be available in-person on the day of your class beginning 30 minutes prior to the start time; exact cash or check only for in-person registration.



Dancers may also audition by video submission.

When will I get the results of my audition?

Dancers will be notified of the status of their audition within two weeks of the audition date. Results will be sent via email to the primary contact listed on the audition form.

I have been accepted into the program. What should I do now?

Dancers accepted into the Senior Intensive and / or Contemporary Intensive can register for their selected program online or by paper form. Housing is available for both programs at an additional cost. Registration and Housing sign-up will close on April 6th. Program and Housing availability are first come first serve.

Is it possible to attend only 1 week of the Senior Ballet program?

Requests to attend only one week of the Senior Ballet Intensive can be made by contacting the Summer Programs Office – by email or 616.454.4771 ext. 17.

How many students are in the classes?

Junior Intensive: 15-20
Senior Intensive: 25-45
Contemporary Intensive: 20-30

Do you offer Pas de Deux classes?

Pax de Deux classes may be offered for upper level students in the Senior Ballet Intensive, depending on enrollment.

Is there a performance at the conclusion of the Summer Intensive?

Senior Intensive: Students that attend our 5-Week or 3-Week programs will have the opportunity to perform in the Summer Showcase scheduled for Friday evening, July 24.

Junior Intensive: Students that attend Weeks 4 and 5 of the program will have the opportunity to perform in the Summer Showcase scheduled for Friday evening, July 24.

Contemporary Intensive – Students that attend at least Week 2 of the Intensive program will have the opportunity to perform in the Summer Showcase scheduled for Friday evening, July 24.

Is there housing available during the program?

Housing plans are available for Senior Ballet and Contemporary Intensive students ages 14-24. Dancers looking to enroll in the housing program must do so by April 6.
