Introducing Grand Rapids Ballet’s new Master Class Series!

Our new master class series is bringing some of the best-known names in the dance world to Grand Rapids Ballet for a once in a lifetime opportunity! Learn from the best in the business in a 1.5 hour ballet class followed by an hour of repertory and coaching. Learn choreography from famous works such as West Side Story and world-renowned choreographers such as George Balanchine and Annabelle Lopez-Ochoa.

Open to any ballet student age 13-21 with an intermediate to advanced level of training. Class size is limited so please register early. Held on stage at the Grand Rapids Ballet’s Peter Martin Wege Theatre. Class and repertory observation tickets are also available.

James Sofranko – August 22nd, 2026

James Sofranko’s Bio

James Sofranko assumed the position of Artistic Director of Grand Rapids Ballet in 2018 after an 18-year career as a soloist with the San Francisco Ballet.

He is originally from Cincinnati, Ohio, and received his dance training at The Harid Conservatory in Florida and later at The Juilliard School in New York City, where he received his BFA in dance.

At San Francisco Ballet, he danced in numerous works and world premieres by choreographers such as Helgi Tomasson, Val Caniparoli, William Forsythe, Liam Scarlett, Justin Peck, Alexi Ratmansky, Edwaard Liang, Lar Lubovitch, Wayne Macgregor, Mark Morris, Julia Adam, Yuri Possokhov, Christopher Wheeldon, Paul Taylor, Arthur Pita, Stanton Welch, Jorma Elo, Hans Van Manen, Jiri Kylian, John Neumeier, James Kudelka, Lila York, Kenneth Macmillan, George Balanchine, and Jerome Robbins. Some of his favorite roles include Mercutio in Tomasson’s Romeo and Juliet, Eros in Mark Morris’ Sylvia, Bugle Boy in Taylor’s Company B, and the second sailor in Robbins’ Fancy Free.

He received an Isadora Duncan award (Izzie) for best performance in 2011 in Yuri Possokhov’s Classical Symphony.

James starred in the principal role of Eddie in the Broadway touring company of Movin’ Out, a musical choreographed by Twyla Tharp to the songs of Billy Joel.

In 2012 he co-founded DanceFAR (Dance For A Reason), an annual benefit performance and after-party that brings the Bay Area dance community together to support the work of the Cancer Prevention Institute of California (CPIC).

In 2014, he formed a new contemporary repertory company in San Francisco, SFDanceworks, presenting works by Alejandro Cerrudo, Lar Lubovitch, José Limón, Nacho Duato, Christopher Bruce, and world premieres by Penny Saunders, James Graham, Danielle Rowe, Dana Genshaft, and Sofranko himself. He continues his work with SFDanceworks currently in the role of Artistic Advisor.

Since 2018, Sofranko has created 11 original works for Grand Rapids Ballet: Two Tangos, Ballade, The Sweet By and By, A Dreamer, Calling Forth, Aubade, Julia, Piece of You, Ave Maria, Peter and the Wolf, and Romeo and Juliet Fantasy. In February 2023 he will create a world-premiere full-length production of Romeo and Juliet to be premiered at DeVos Performance Hall with the Grand Rapids Symphony. He has also created works for San Francisco Ballet School, SFDanceworks, Long Beach Ballet, and Marin Dance Theater. James has worked as a repetiteur for Yuri Possokhov, resident choreographer for San Francisco Ballet, and has staged his ballets on Cincinnati Ballet, Colorado Ballet, Grand Rapids Ballet and San Francisco Ballet.

Since assuming the directorship of Grand Rapids Ballet, the company’s repertoire has grown to include classical and contemporary works by some of the most sought after choreographers working today. The dancers have come from across the United States and around the world.

Sofranko has brought repertory which includes choreography by Yuri Possokhov, Alejandro Cerrudo, Penny Saunders, Trey McIntyre, Val Caniparoli, Adam Hougland, Danielle Rowe, Nicolas Blanc, Brian Enos, Christopher Stowell, Darrell Grand-Moultrie, Jennifer Archibald, Ben Stevenson, Edwaard Liang, Amy Seiwert, Katarzyna Skarpetowska, and George Balanchine. He instituted a program entitled Jumpstart which allows new choreographic talent to emerge from within the ranks of the dancers. He has personally collaborated on world premieres with musicians Gene Hahn and Jordan Hamilton, and the company collaborates frequently with other cultural organizations in the area, including with the Grand Rapids Symphony, ArtPrize, Festival of the Arts, DisArt and the Grand Rapids Art Museum.

Since 2019 the company has performed annually at the amphitheater at the Frederick Meijer Gardens and Sculpture Park and in 2021 began performing at Studio Park Celebration Cinemas in downtown Grand Rapids.

During the 2020-21 season, Grand Rapids Ballet successfully weathered the pandemic by producing a first-ever virtual season, in collaboration with SALT Creative Production Studios. Sofranko curated four virtual programs, including “The Nutcracker Experience,” which was seen on television throughout West Michigan and earned the company an Emmy nomination.

Christine Rocas’ Bio

Christine Rocas was born in San Diego, California, and grew up in the Philippines.  She performed with Ballet Manilla from 1998 to 2005, dancing principal (or lead, leading) roles in ballets including The Nutcracker, Le Corsaire, La Bayadère, Swan Lake, The Sleeping Beauty, and Don Quixote. In 2005, she was a silver medalist at the New York International Ballet Competition, where she received the Arpino Award, garnering her a one-year contract with The Joffrey Ballet.

Robert Lafosse – November 7, 2026

Robert Lafosse’s Bio

Mr. La Fosse joined New York City Ballet in 1986 as a principal dancer after a nine-year career with American Ballet Theatre, which he joined in 1977. During his career with NYCB, Mr. La Fosse originated roles in Jerome Robbins’ Quiet City, Piccolo Balletto and West Side Story Suite, Peter Martins’ A Fool for You and Tea Rose, and in Susan Stroman’s “Blossom Got Kissed” from Duke!

His enormous repertory with NYCB has included such works as George Balanchine’s Nutcracker, Coppélia, Orpheus, Agon, Donizetti Variations, Prodigal Son, Slaughter on Tenth Avenue, Union Jack, Vienna Waltzes, and Who Cares?; and Mr. Robbins’ Interplay, Afternoon of a Faun, The Concert, Other Dances, Dances at a Gathering, Fancy Free, The Four Seasons, The Goldberg Variations, I’m Old Fashioned, Opus 19/The Dreamer, and Watermill.

With ABT, he danced leading roles in many of the full-length classics and appeared in works by Eugene Loring, Agnes de Mille, Antony Tudor, and Twyla Tharp.

For the Broadway stage, Mr. La Fosse starred in Bob Fosse’s Dancin’ and Jerome Robbins’ Broadway, for which he received a 1989 Tony Award nomination for Best Actor in a Musical.

In addition to his performing career, Mr. La Fosse is also an established choreographer who has created over 100 works for ballet, opera, musical theater, film and television.

In the past he has taught at New York City Ballet, School of American Ballet, ABT Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis School, The Julliard School, Princeton University, SUNY Purchase and Barnard College.

He performs in the New York City Ballet’s annual production of George Balanchine’s The Nutcracker as Herr Drosselmiere.

Presently, he stages the ballets and theater choreography of Jerome Robbins throughout the world.

Maria Kowroski Master Class Grand Rapids

Maria Kowroski’s Bio

Maria became Artistic Director of New Jersey Ballet in November 2021, and her appointment has seen a new creative energy fuel an artistic renaissance within the institution. In a very short period of time, Ms. Kowroski has expanded the repertory of New Jersey Ballet to include a number of works by renowned choreographers, including George Balanchine, Christopher Wheeldon, and Jerome Robbins. She recently commissioned a new work by Harrison Ball, principal dancer at New York City Ballet. The new work included a collaboration with world-renowned fashion designer Zac Posen, and the premiere on November 19, 2022, received rave reviews and a standing ovation.

Ms. Kowroski’s new artistic vision calls for an expansion of workweeks for the artists by adding performances and venues. Forming new collaborations with arts organizations and growing community programming that establishes diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility. Ms. Kowroski plans to leverage her experience and extensive dance world connections to bring new repertory to communities throughout New Jersey.

Maria’s was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan, where she began her ballet training at age seven with the School of Grand Rapids Ballet. Ms. Kowroski entered the School of American Ballet (SAB), the official school of New York City Ballet, in the fall of 1992. She became an apprentice with New York City Ballet in the summer of 1994 and was invited to join the Company as a member of the corps de ballet in January of 1995. In the spring of 1997, Ms. Kowroski was promoted to the rank of soloist, and in the spring of 1999, she was promoted to principal dancer.

Ms. Kowroski has danced many principal roles in the Balanchine repertory including, Agon, Apollo, Concerto Barocco, Mozartiana, Diamonds, Rubies and Emeralds from Jewels, Prodigal Son, Stravinsky Violin Concerto, Chaconne and Bugaku. Ms. Kowroski has had the pleasure of being created on by several choreographers including Jerome Robbins, Christopher Wheeldon, Mauro Bigonzetti, Justin Peck, Peter Martins, Boris Eifman, and Helgi Tomasson. She has also had the great privilege of working with the great choreographers Alexei Ratmansky and William Forsythe. Ms. Kowroski was a guest artist with the Mariinsky ballet performing Swan Lake in 2003, a mixed Balanchine program in 2006 and 2019. In 1994 Ms. Kowroski was the recipient of the Princess Grace Award and in 2011 she received the Jerome Robbins award. Ms. Kowroski  joined New Jersey Ballet Company as the Acting Artistic Director in November 2021 and became Artistic Director in September 2022.

Yuka Oba-Muschiana – April17, 2027

Yuka Oba-Muschiana’s Bio

Yuka was born in Japan where she received her training from Hitomi Takeuchi Ballet School. In 2006, she attended English National Ballet School in the UK where she also danced many soloist roles. Upon graduating, Mario Radacovsky invited her to join the Slovak National Ballet where she danced a variety of roles such as Tchaikovsky Pas de Deux by George Balanchine, Spring lead lady in Four seasons by James Kudelka.

Yuka was then invited to join Grand Rapids Ballet in 2011 where she has since danced many principal roles in ballets by George Balanchine (Serenade, Allegro Brilliant, Who Care’s?, Rubies and Four Temperaments) Marius Petipa (Sleeping Beauty, Swan Lake) Yuri Possokhov (Firebird), Ben Stevensen (Cinderella), Val Caniparoli (Ibsen’s House, The Nutcracker), Christopher Stowell (A Midsummer Night’s Dream), Trey McIntyre (Wild Sweet Love), Adam Hougland (Cold Virtues), Annabelle Lopez Ochoa (Written and Forgotten, Memorias del Dorado, Dangerous Liaisons), Alejandro Cerrudo (Extremely Close), James Sofranko (Romeo & Juliet Balcony Pas de Deux), Nicolas Blanc (Aquatic Hypoxia), Katarzyna Skarpetowska (Off the Canvas), Daniella Rowe (For Pixie), Olivier Wevers (The Sofa, Midsummer), Mario Radakovsky, Jennifer Archibald, David Parsons, Jose Limon, Kirk Peterson, Brian Enos, Sagi Gross, Andrea Schermoly, Norbert De La Cruz and Penny Saunders.

Yuka has won many competitions in Japan including NBA All Japan Ballet Competition, Saitama All Japan Dance Competition, UB All Japan Ballet Union Competition, International Ballet Competition in Yokohama, and others. In 2013, Yuka had the honor of performing Olivier Wever’s The Sofa at the Joyce Theatre in New York and reprised her role in Seattle. Yuka performed Le Corsaire Pas de Deux in the gala at The National Theatre in Tokyo and the Pas de Deux from Le Carnaval de Venise in Fukushima. In 2014, Val Caniparoli choreographed Clara on Yuka for the world premiere of The Nutcracker. She also choreographed for Grand Rapids Ballet since 2015 such as Wave, Eriha, Death and Maiden, Tomorrow Never Comes and Chansons de Bilitis. 2021 Virtual season Yuka had the opportunity to choreograph, direct and film her piece “sol and luna” . Her new piece for the Grand Rapids Ballet “Land of Gods” was commissioned for part of the program 2023-24 season. She also was invited to choreograph and stage her piece with Ballet Arkansas, Saint Louis Dance Theatre trainee program and Flint Institute of Music.
